FIRST®
For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology

FIRST's mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

For students aged 6-18, it’s the hardest fun you’ll ever have. For team Mentors, Coaches, and Volunteers, it’s the most rewarding adventure you’ll ever undertake. For Sponsors, it’s the most enlightened investment you could ever make. FIRST is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization devoted to helping young people discover and develop a passion for science, engineering, technology, and math. Founded over 20 years ago by inventor Dean Kamen, the 2012-2013 FIRST season attracted more than 300,000 youth and more than 120,000 Mentors, Coaches, and Volunteers from 70+ countries. The annual programs culminate in an international robotics competition and celebration where teams win recognition, gain self confidence, develop people and life skills, make new friends, and perhaps discover an unforeseen career path.

FTC - FIRST TECH CHALLENGE

FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC®) is the program that Renaissance Robotics competes in.

The FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC®) is a mid-level robotics competition for high-school students that launched in 2005. It offers the traditional challenge of a FIRST® Robotics Competition but with a more accessible and affordable robotics kit. The ultimate goal of FTC® is to reach more young people with a lower-cost, more accessible opportunity to discover the excitement and rewards of science, technology, and engineering.

FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is designed for high-schoolers who want to compete head to head using a sports model. Teams of about 10 students are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete on a 12 X 12’ field in an Alliance format against other teams. Robots are built using a TETRIX® or MATRIX® platforms that are reusable from year-to-year,  and programmed using a variety of languages. Teams, including Coaches, Mentors, and Volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles.

How FTC Works

after-school groups, churches, civic

organizations, neighborhood groups

■ Corporate Sponsors

■ Sports-like events with judges and awards

■ Up to 48 teams per event

■ Can be used in and out of the classroom

■ Design, build, and program robots

■ Get hands-on programming and

rapid-prototyping experience

■ Apply real-world math and science concepts

Renaissance Robotics and FIRST

Team members of Renaissance Robotics have pretty much grown up as FIRST kids!

Coach Denny started coaching JrFLL & FLL in 2005, and FTC in 2012 when the threat of kids starting to age out of FLL was a few years away. Most of us have several years on Denny's BRICKschoolers Jr (JrFLL) & BRICKschoolers teams (FLL)  or Renaissance Robotics (FTC). The exception is Nicholas who comes to us from Legonators (FLL). Most of us have done multiple levels of FIRST programs in the same year, and often we started younger than the recommended age.
